Dating A Jehovah’s Witness

It was the best year of my life when I met and dated a JW girl. We had a lot of fun, a  lot of laughs and what was by all appearances a loving, warm relationship. She was sweet, funny and really affectionate. For nearly the entire year she was in a wheelchair as the result of a car accident. One thing though was missing. As a Christian I had little time for God. I kind of forgot about Him. My JW girlfriend was pretty much my whole world. It wasn’t until much later that that I realized God would never bless our union. We were unequally yoked. She knew nothing about the free gift of salvation. Knew nothing of God’s grace. Nothing  of the redemption through the blood of Christ. The Truth was not in her. The Kingdom Hall where she attended church services, teaches that Jesus was merely the chief of the angels; the Archangel Michael. His death didn’t pay the penalty for sin, but brought back the possibility for perfection in the human life. We can be righteous on our own. The deity of Christ as the Creator of all things is completely denied and really doesn’t play much of a role anymore. My JW girlfriend and I were spiritually incompatible. If we talked about the things of God, she refused to use the Holy Bible. Her religion has its own “bible” as do the other religious cults. The founder of the JWs, Charles T. Russell and two of his friends were in  a basement with the Holy Bible and went through it verse by verse. If they disagreed with something, they merely made changes to it . Russell was offended by the Bible’s teaching on hell, that he changed it to eternal annihilation. In other words, all non JWs will cease to exist after death. They will only be in God’s memory. Try as I might to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to my JW girlfriend, it was all Greek to her. She said I was being weird.

When she healed from her injuries and began to walk again, she not only ditched the wheelchair, but she also ditched me. It was sudden, without warning. I didn’t even know what hit me. Were there signs she was losing interest? Personality change? I was so naive and clueless.I  was so blinded  by love I thought we were forever.  It wasn’t until much later that I learned from a mutual friend that she had gone back to a guy she had dated when we first met. He wasn’t a JW. He had no religious beliefs and was an alcoholic.

For months afterwards, I couldn’t eat or sleep. I sank into a deep depression. Trying to snap out of it, I called a JW lady who lived up the road from me. Soon they were coming to my house weekly for bible study. I wanted to know what the JWs actually believe. Somehow I thought it would help me to understand my ex girlfriend better. Maybe I just wanted to feel closer to her by spending time with “her people.” It didn’t work. Instead, I felt something important was missing. I felt empty. It didn’t take long to find out what it was. Jesus Christ was missing. They didn’t even talk about him. I felt so guilty because I have been a Christian for many years and knew better. I quickly repented.

It’s been 14 years since I last saw my old JW girlfriend. I still think about her from time to time and, yeah, sometimes I still miss her. But I also know the union could never work. She completely rejects the Savior that I love and put all my faith in. I still pray for her that God will open her spiritual eyes and her heart to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ before it is too late.

What About Islam… Part 2

The problem with Islam is that it had veered off course. It went in a completely opposite direction. Its very foundation is based on a false premise that Ishmael, not Isaac, was God’s promised child. From there they were at the point of no return. When a foundation is faulty, most teachings that comes from it may also be faulty. The God of the Holy Bible has always been known as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Ishmael is not mentioned because he was not one of the patriarchs who were all part of God’s redemptive plan. (Ishmael, instead was made the forefather of of 12 princes).  Abraham’s spiritual descendants are all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Physically he is the father of many nations.

Muslims claim that the Bible as we know it today is not the same revelation that God originally revealed, because the people who handled the text did not record it accurately. They, along with other religious cults, believe that God stood by and allowed men to trample all over his Word, filling it with errors to the point that it’s corrupted. Yet, it’s these same religions that added and subtracted to the Holy Scriptures doing violence to it.. This is what the cults do.They write their own bible. Yet, when you ask them to show where the errors are, they become vague and you never get a straight answer. Look, God is not mocked. He will judge us by how we treated his Word. God promised to preserve his word and he has. His very holy character and nature depends on it. We are calling God a liar if we accuse Him of failing to do what He said He would do. God said: “The flower will fade, the grass will wither , but the word of God will endure forever.”  (Isaiah 40:8)  Psalm 118:89 says: “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.” God’s word has already been settled in heaven. God entrusted the Jews with His holy oracles. (Romans 3:2) They painstakingly copied and recopied it  over and over. So where are these so-called errors?

Instead of respecting the Torah and other books of the Jewish Scriptures which are the same as the Old Testament in the Christian Bible, Islam created the Qu’ran in order to defend a religion that all but abandoned God’s plan of salvation which is that all who live by  faith  become a child of Abraham and inherit the blessings promised to Abraham’s children. What does it mean to live by faith? It means we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died for the sins of the world. This is what the Holy Bible teaches.

Some of the false beliefs of Islam is they completely deny the deity of Jesus Christ. To them he was just a good man. A prophet just like Muhammad. They also deny that Jesus was ever crucified. They claim he faked his death by merely swooning on the cross. I have heard some Muslims say that Judas Iscariot, one of the’ 12 apostles who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, actually took Jesus’ place on the cross and died. Muslims also believe that Jesus whom they call Isa, will one day return and convert to Islam. This Isa will work with the Mahdi who is the Muslim savior to force all non Muslims to convert under threat of death. If this isn’t blasphemy, I don’t know what is!

What About Islam?

Islam, along with Judaism and Christianity believe they are descendants of Abraham. In the Qur’an, the Muslim’s holy book, God calls upon people to “follow the religion of Abraham” ( Qu’ran 3:95)  Unlike Christians and Jews, Islam follows the ancestral line of Ishmael who is the forefather of the Arab race. They believe it was Ishmael,  not Isaac, who was the child  of promise to come from the loins Abraham. Because many years had passed after God made this promise, and still no child, Sarah herself was getting old and her womb dead, she began to have serious doubts. Even Abraham’s faith began to waver a bit. Like most Christians, especially today, Sarah couldn’t wait for God’s timing. She mistakenly thought she could help God speed things up by telling Abraham to sleep with  Hagar, the Egyptian slave woman. Out of that union the illegitimate Ishmael was born. The Holy Bible tells us he was not the son God had promised Abraham. His birth was a result of disobedience on the part of both Sarah and Abraham. Genesis 16 tells us that Ishmael would be a wild man-a wild-assed man like a donkey. His hand would be against every man and every man’s hand would be against him. The meaning being that Ishmael would be hot tempered and warlike.  Soon, Hagar and Ismael would be thrown out of their tent at Sarah’s insistence where they ended up wandering in the Desert of Beersheba.  Sarah, at nearly age 90,  did indeed become pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, (he was 100 years of age) at the very time God had promised him. Later, Isaac would go on to have a son, Jacob, who in turn had 12 sons that became the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel. God began to be known as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Ishmael is not even mentioned.  Judaism then flourished and from the Jews came Christianity. So, where does Islam fit in?

Islam was founded back in the 7th century. This is very late in Christian and Judaism history.  Although Muhammad was not the founder of Islam, he did much to reform it.  The Quran,  considered to be the sacred text of the Muslims, contains Muhammad’s teachings which he claimed was revealed to him from Allah by the angel Gabriel. Yet, there many problems with this religion. First of all, its foundation is flawed. Although they do believe in some of the writings in the Holy Bible, they have other beliefs which completely contradict what God’s Word says. They say that the Torah, the first 5 books of the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Bible, is so corrupted that the Qu’ran became necessary.

A Different Plan Of Salvation For The Jews?

Many Christians and Jews seem to believe that God has one plan of salvation for the Jewish people and another plan for the rest of us. They think that Jews, by their birth because they are God’s chosen people,  have a guaranteed ticket to eternal life with God. Although Saul (the apostle Paul) of Taurus, a Jew,and a zealous one at that, taught there is only one way to God and Heaven, many of the Jewish people reject Paul and the entire  New Testament. However, one can see God’s plan of salvation in the Old Testament as it has never changed. Using Abraham, the father of the Jews, as our example, how was he justified in God’s eyes? What was it Abraham had done for God to credit him with righteousness? Was it because Abraham obeyed the law of circumcision? No, this was 14 years before Abraham was circumcised. Was it his obedience to the sacrificing of his son Issac? No, Issac hadn’t even been born yet. How about church attendance or being baptized? No, those was no “church” in Abraham’s time. Was it obedience to the Mosaic law or the Ten Commandments? No, this was many, many years before the time of Moses. So just how was it God credited righteousness to Abraham’s account (justification)? Scriptures tells us that Abraham believed God.

Genesis 15:6: “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”

Abraham not only believed in the existence of the one true God, he believed the promises of God. It is an easy thing to believe God exists, for even the devil believes in God and trembles, yet satan and his demons of course do not possess salvation.

In John 8:56, Jesus said : “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.” Abraham knew about a coming Redeemer. As Hebrews 11 also points out, Abraham died having the faith that someday he would see Christ.

Galatians 3:28 says: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

The Scriptures clearly teaches that salvation is faith alone in Christ alone. God has only ONE plan of salvation for both Jews and Gentiles.

Is There Such A Thing As Messianic Jews?

Not far from where I live there’s a Messianic Fellowship building of worship where both Messianic Jews and Christians congregate on the sabbath. These Christians observe Jewish holy days. One of them owns a 2nd hand shop and always closes it on certain feast days like the Feast of the Trumpets. These so called Christians are similar to those Gentiles in the New Testament who were referred to as devout god-fearers. They put themselves under the Jewish law and would follow synagogue teachings. The Bible tells us that these God fearers were not saved (born again). Cornelius and Lydia are two examples. They were devout and worshiped God, yet Peter and Paul had to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them. They came to believe and were later baptized. It is not enough to be religious or even to believe in the existence God and have a form of worship, for even demons believe in the one true God and tremble. They of course do not posses salvation.

Why would any Gentile, especially those who claim to be Christian, want to put themselves under the law in this age of grace? The law was never meant for them. It was given to the nation of Israel to show the Jews what sin is and how far they have fallen. That man cannot save himself. He needs a Messiah. The law was never meant to be permanent as no  one can keep the whole law. It was to pave the way for God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ who alone saves us.

Most Messianic Jews still keep the Old Testament practices such as the sabbath, kosher laws, circumcision, holy days, etc. This is mixing the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. The Bible tells us the two are mutually exclusive. They no more mix than do oil and water. Jesus Christ fulfilled the law. He paid our sin debt in full. In  Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek. We are all one. To accept Christ as Savior and at the same time adhere to law keeping is offensive to God. Its denying Christ’s complete atonement at the cross.  God sent His only Son into the world who is now our High Priest forever. His blood alone forgives sins. If you call yourself a Messianic Jew because you believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, then you cannot continue with the Old Covenant.

It begs the question: Have Jews ever asked themselves why there has been no Temple since 70 AD? Why hasn’t God brought back animal sacrifices? How do they handle the fact that they haven’t been able to deal with their sins? Why is there no more physical priesthood in the line of Aaron? The answer is simple. Christ fulfilled all that through His perfect  blood sacrifice. He satisfied all the demands of the law. The main function of a priest was to act as mediator between man and God.To kill animals and spill their blood to cover sin.Yet, Christ in this age of Grace is our sole Mediator. With the shedding of Christ’s blood we have remission of sins. Therefore, the temple is obsolete because now the body of the born again believer in Jesus Christ is a temple where the Holy Spirit indwells

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. This is the New Covenant. Christ did it all for us, By accepting Him as Messiah we have peace with God. Salvation is the work of God, not the work of man. Its a free gift. Accept it. Don’t try to earn it through a myriad of works, rules and law keeping. You’ll never make it.

Is Mormonism Necessary?

Is Mormonism necessary? Did they really restore the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Did this Gospel ever become lost, and if so, when? The Mormon church’s very existence depends on whether or not there was ever a complete apostasy in the entire known world. The Gospel of Jesus Christ would have to have left the earth and plunged the world in darkness after the death of Jesus’ apostles. Did this actually happen?

According to the Holy Bible the answer is a resounding no! Over and over we read of God’s promise that His word shall endure forever. (Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.) We read that God always had a faithful remnant throughout biblical history. In Matt. 16:18, Jesus Christ said that the gates of hell will never prevail against His church. Some faith groups have put their own spin on this,  but the bottom line is that Christ meant what He said. Satan cannot stop the church. What church?  The church which is made up of born again, regenerated believers in Jesus Christ and in the Word of God.

Even way back in the time of Elijah in 1Kings 19, where we read about how Elijah ran away from Jezebel and cried out to God that there was no one left who still believed in God. God responded that He left for Himself a faithful remnant of 7,000 men who refused to bow the knee to baal.

The Mormon church makes the claim that there was a complete apostasy after the death of Jesus’ apostles. Yet these apostles never did teach the New Covenant of grace. Their ministry was to the nation of Israel. They were slow to understand that grace had replaced law keeping. That salvation comes through the finished work of the cross. These truths were revealed to the apostle Paul, who spent 3 years with our risen Lord, whether in visions or face to face we do not know, but Christ revealed the mystery hidden throughout the ages of His Gospel, the death, burial and resurrection. It is only by Christ’s shed blood that we find forgiveness and by believing on Him we can have salvation.  Paul taught that law keeping had ended. Christ Himself took the laws and ordinances and nailed them to Calvary’s cross. The the plan of salvation is the same for  Jews as for  Gentiles. It is by faith alone in Christ alone. Salvation cannot come by being a member of a certain church. It is not found by obedience to church rules or performance of rituals.

Even during the Tribulation God will still have a faithful remnant. One third of the Jews will survive.  There will be 144,000 young Jewish men who will be preaching and witnessing to the multitude. Will these Jews be preaching the Mormon gospel? No, of course not. They will preach that Christ the Messiah is coming to establish His rule and reign, not in North America, but in Jerusalem.

In the Holy Scriptures, God reassures us that His word will endure forever. In fact, God views His word above His own name. He watches over it carefully to bring His promises to pass. (Psalms 138:2: “for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.”)

For these reasons and others, we see that a total apostasy is impossible. Sure there were apostasies in New Testament times, but the Bible tells us that  ‘some’ or ‘many’ had apostatized. Never does it say it was complete. God always has a faithful remnant. Therefore, the Mormon Church cannot justify its existence.

Is Mormonism Old Testament?

Does Mormonism adhere to Old Testament principles? Crazy question? I don’t think so. Take for example the priesthood.Where in all of the New Testament do we read anything about a need for the priesthood today?  The apostle Peter mentions a royal priesthood made up of all true believers of Jesus Christ.

In the Old Testament the priesthood was for Israelites only. One had to be a levite . This means no non Jews. The majority of Mormons are gentiles although they won’t admit this. The office of high priest was given to Aaron and his sons. It was never mean for the church (the body of Christ) The high priest was  a foreshadowing of the coming Messiah. who would ultimately fulfill this office forever.  After Jesus died on the cross, the priesthood was rendered defunct and obsolete. It was inferior. Why? Because priests are men and men die, and need to be replaced over and over again. Only God the Son qualifies. So, its baffling as to why the Mormon church (not unlike the Roman Catholic Church), made this error by resurrecting a dead system.

Another example are Temples. The Mormon church has temples all over the place. Where did the apostles ever teach this? Where did the apostle Paul ever teach it? In God’s word we read that temples ceased when Jesus Christ ushered in a brand new Covenant. After his Crucifixion, the temple veil was torn in half from top to bottom, signifying the end of temple rituals. Acts 17:24 tells us that God does not dwell in temples built by hand.

Mormons also have a countless number of laws and ordinances that they must follow. Ask them exactly how many they have and you usually will not get an answer. This is reminiscent of Jews who gave themselves 613 laws which they must obey. Yet God never instituted nor requires this. In fact, Jesus said it places a yoke around people’s necks. Mormons again do not understand this dispensation of God’s grace. We are saved by grace and not of works. It is the gift of God. (Eph 2:8). If you work for a gift than it ceases to be a gift, but rather becomes something you earned. You can’t work for salvation. Mixing law with grace is wrong.

Seems the Mormon church has failed to understand that Jesus Christ finished the plan of salvation. He doesn’t need any help from man. His blood sacrifice was more than sufficient to pay for the sins of the world.
